Usually only male deer have antlers, and reindeer are the only species of deer in which both male and female deer have antlers, although the female has much smaller antlers. Bucks shed their antlers each winter and begin to grow new ones in the spring, when the antlers are covered with a layer of skin called antler. Antlers are shed when the antlers are formed.
